Historically, the terms Astrology and Astronomy both referred to the same thing. But, after the developments brought by the western 17th century philosophy, they are now recognized as totally separate disciplines.
Astronomy is regarded as a subject of science. In fact, it has emerged as one of the most widely studied academic disciplines. It is basically the study of objects in the Universe and their phenomena beyond the atmosphere of the Earth. These objects include planets, stars, and comets. The purpose of the examination of these objects is to find information about their origin and structure. Since it is a subject of science, it also has links with other sciences, such as Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
Astrology, on the other hand, is not a science. Instead, it is basically a belief system. Astrologers believe that the positions of the various heavenly bodies, including the Sun, moon and other planets have deep influences on the lives and personalities of people. However, there are no scientific grounds for such beliefs. Besides that, there is an assumption about Earth that it is a special part of the Universe. On the other hand, Astronomy considers Earth as just one of the millions of other objects in the universe.
Astronomy mainly deals with the physics of the universe. Astronomers use abstract mathematical calculations, naturalistic presuppositions, and an array of scientific methods to study the phenomena in the Universe.
Astrologers explain the phenomena in the Universe as well. They even use astronomical calculations in order to figure out the positions of the heavenly bodies, but they do not try to explore the physics of the Universe. Instead, they try to co-relate the various celestial events, such as sign positions and astrological aspects with the behavior of human beings and other events on Earth. The reason why astrology has not been accepted as a complete science lies in the very fact that besides using the scientific astronomical calculations, it also uses various symbolisms, folklore, religious and mystical reasoning. The astrologers then blend the results with mathematical predictions.
As per Astronomy, there is no center point in the Universe, as it is dynamic and expanding outward. On the other hand, as per astrology, this Universe is geocentric. Astrologers believe that the universe is static, changeless, and harmonious.
Astrology works on the assumption that the universe is deterministic. It means the events on earth and a person's life is completely predictable. Astrologers also believe that the events associated with the solar system have their influences on a person's life. Astronomy is against this belief. It is based on the scientific indetermination concept, as per which nothing can be predicted.
Astrology and astronomy both have stayed together for thousands of years. In fact, it was astrology that promoted astronomy. Various astronomical researches were funded from astrology. But, when the contradictions started appearing, both the disciplines were separated from each other. In fact, there was a time in the history when astrology had lost its popularity because of so many wrong predictions, but it won back widespread popularity after the birth of Princess Margaret in 1930. This was the time when her horoscope was published in the London Sunday Express, which actually started the trend of publishing astrological horoscopes in modern newspapers and magazines.
